The Power of (Dill) Pickles

I love my patients!! They always give me the best ideas for posts. A special Thank You to Alice for this one 😉

A lot of my patients experience cramping—it’s no fun, waking up at 2 in the morning with cramping in your legs! Trust me, I’ve been there. I wanted to share with you what I tell my patients when they experience this. I have a few ways beyond the normal suggestions. OF COURSE—you want to make sure that you are staying hydrated (a lot of my athletes deal with cramping due to this Florida humidity and heat!). If you are outside and/or exercising in the summer, you want to make sure you hydrate even more than usual. This heat is BRUTAL. A lot of people suggest quinine or bananas for chronic cramping—and these are great suggestions. But—what about when it’s 2 in the morning? I’m going to give you the best tip I can give: DILL PICKLE JUICE!

I don’t know what it is—but dill pickle juice has always worked for my 2 AM cramping. I just chug a few swallows and it’s gone. I have shared this with many patients over the years, and most of them tell me that it works. You just want to make sure that you’re using the juice of DILL pickles. Sweet pickle juice doesn’t work. If you can’t stand the taste of dill pickles, there are a few other options. A teaspoon of yellow mustard will also work. It’s not fun, but it should work. If neither of these are an option you can stomach—I get it. Try taking a few Tums—that will usually work, too.

Please let me know if this advice helps you! As always, I truly appreciate you taking the time to read this blog!
